Algebraic Fractions
Gr 10

The Grade 10 Algebraic Fractions module introduces learners to one of the most important areas of senior-phase algebra. This chapter focuses on helping students understand how to simplify, manipulate, and calculate with fractions that contain variables, while reinforcing the foundational algebraic skills required for success in Grades 11 and 12.

Lessons guide learners through simplifying algebraic fractions, identifying restrictions on denominators, finding lowest common denominators, and performing operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students also learn to factorise expressions in order to reduce fractions, cancel common factors correctly, and recognise when expressions can or cannot be simplified. Step-by-step examples ensure that each new technique builds naturally on previous concepts.

By the end of this module, learners will be able to handle algebraic fractions with confidence, apply factorisation skills accurately, and simplify complex expressions—laying the groundwork for more advanced algebraic manipulation and functions in the senior grades.
