Number Patterns
Gr 10
The Grade 10 Number Patterns module develops learners’ ability to recognise, analyse, and generalise patterns using algebraic techniques. This chapter forms a crucial link between arithmetic reasoning in the lower grades and the more advanced algebra and functions explored in Grades 11 and 12.
Learners revise arithmetic sequences before moving on to constructing general terms (nth-term expressions) for both simple and more complex linear patterns. The module also introduces quadratic patterns, teaching students how to recognise second differences, generate terms, and form quadratic rules. Throughout the lessons, learners develop skills in interpreting pattern tables, comparing different sequences, and applying patterns to real-world and word-problem scenarios.
By the end of this module, students will be able to describe patterns using algebraic expressions, calculate any term in a sequence efficiently, and apply logical reasoning to pattern-based problems—laying a strong foundation for algebra, functions, and sequences in the senior grades.
