Number Patterns
Gr 9
The Grade 9 Number Patterns module develops learners’ ability to recognise, describe, and generalise mathematical patterns using clear rules and structured reasoning. This chapter builds the foundation for algebraic thinking, helping students move from concrete sequences to symbolic expressions with confidence.
Lessons cover identifying arithmetic patterns, determining the common difference, generating terms using a rule, and expressing patterns in both words and algebraic form. Learners also explore linear number patterns, tables, and graphs, gaining an understanding of how patterns connect to functions and real-life contexts. Step-by-step examples guide students through forming general terms (nth-term expressions), extending patterns, and solving problems using pattern-based reasoning.
By the end of this module, students will be able to interpret and construct number patterns accurately, represent them using algebraic expressions, and apply logical reasoning to solve pattern-related problems—skills that are essential for success in Grade 10 algebra and beyond.
