Exponents
Gr 10
The Grade 10 Exponents module strengthens and extends learners’ understanding of the laws of exponents, preparing them for the more advanced algebraic work that follows in Grades 11 and 12. This chapter revises the foundational rules and then introduces new concepts that require careful application of exponent laws and algebraic reasoning.
Learners begin by revisiting the basic exponent laws—product, quotient, power, zero, and negative exponents—before moving on to more complex expressions involving variables, fractions, and multiple bases. The module also introduces exponential equations, scientific notation at a higher level, and the use of exponents in algebraic simplification and problem-solving. Worked examples and clear explanations help learners recognise common errors and understand the logic behind each rule.
By the end of this chapter, students will be able to simplify and manipulate exponential expressions with confidence, solve exponential equations using established laws, and apply exponent rules accurately in algebra, functions, and scientific contexts. These skills form a crucial foundation for exponential functions and logarithms covered in subsequent grades.
