Exponents and Surds Gr 11

The Grade 11 Exponents and Surds module extends learners’ understanding of exponential laws and introduces the systematic manipulation of irrational numbers. This chapter strengthens algebraic fluency and prepares students for the more advanced algebra and functions work required in Grade 12.

Learners revise the laws of exponents before applying them to more complex expressions involving variables, fractions, and negative or zero exponents. The module then introduces surds, focusing on simplifying square roots, rationalising denominators, and performing operations with surds in algebraic expressions. Clear explanations and worked examples help learners recognise patterns, avoid common errors, and apply the correct rules consistently.

By the end of this module, students will be able to simplify and manipulate exponential expressions confidently, work accurately with surds, and use these skills in algebra, equations, and functions—forming a crucial foundation for senior-phase mathematics.
